Results of the work "Ulyanovsk is UNESCO city of literature" for 2021.
21.01.2022

Ulyanovsk today is the only city in Russia, one of the 42 world cities of literature. The project office "Ulyanovsk- UNESCO City of Literature" has been working in Ulyanovsk for 6 years and interacts with 90 countries and 295 cities of the world as a part of UVESCO creative cities. Let's remember what 2021 was like for us.

The year was full of bright and interesting events, new opportunities and creative projects. International cooperation was actively conducted, which gave 11 author projects to the city. Let's remember about each of them.

"The International Literary Ice Rink" interested 13 UNESCO cities and made it possible to combine literature and urban space in order to develop the creative potential of the city. The project was marked by the personal gratitude of Ernesto Renato Ottone Ramirez, UNESCO Deputy General Director General of Culture.

An equally striking event was the online dialogue of the Ulyanovsk poet Sergei Gogin with the British poet-performer Rosy Carrick. It is pleasant to note that colleagues from Europe are still interested in the national cultural heritage: the meeting also discussed Rosy's work on her new collection of translations of little-known poems by Vladimir Mayakovsky for children "Daughter".

The international campaign "Poems by mail" was also successfully held. 11 countries of the world, including 23 cities of Russia, became participants. The year was also remembered for the Ronda Poetry Festival in the Portuguese city of Leiria, the offline exposition and online exhibition of poetry at the Manchester Poetry Library, the online participation of the Ulyanovsk poet Dmitry Nozdryakov in the XXVI Reading Festival in Nanjing (China), the annual conferences of UNESCO creative and literary cities in Reykjavik (Iceland) and the landmark international project "The only question", successfully implemented by Gala Uzryutova, during which a dialogue was built with 40 authors from 18 UNESCO cities.

Separately to note the breakthrough of the year - Gala Uzryutova released the author's collection of poems "All the names are occupied, but one is vacant" in English. The works of other Ulyanovsk authors do not go unnoticed either: Pavel Soldatov successfully presented our city at the «Slamovision», and the poet and novelist Igor Ulitin took part in the XXI International forum of young writers of Russia, CIS countries and abroad «Lipki». Our work within the city was equally productive. The results were such events and competitions as Literature-2021, as well as the city competition of creative projects and initiatives in the field of culture "Creative City". According to the results of the competition, 2 literary stops and 4 literary pedestrian crossings were created.

The project work was also active. The International Residence of Artists and Writers was supported by the Presidential Grants Fund. With the serious financial support of the Russian Cultural Foundation, a sketchbook based on the book by I. Goncharov "Frigate Pallada" with illustrations by Yulia Uzryutova was published.

«Ulyanovsk-UNESCO City of Literature» program has been implemented by the Ulyanovsk City Administration since 2015. During this time, it was possible to create a stable infrastructure of the program, identify and provide sources of funding and a strategy for the development of the program. Today we see its effective results: interesting international projects, active project activities, support and escort of talented young writers, high appreciation of the activities of the project office by international partners. It is great that our colleagues from Kargopol, Kazan and St. Petersburg have become members of the Creative Cities network and our strategic partners. We are negotiating with them on joint projects in the cultural life of Ulyanovsk," said Inna Mitrofanova, Deputy Head of the city of Human Development.

Summing up the results of the completed year, we express our personal gratitude to Gala Uzryutova for her valuable contribution to the project, we congratulate her on a new stage in her creative biography: based on Gala's book "Sasha Country", a film was included in the program of the Berlin Film Festival and we wish her further success in the world of literature.

We also express our gratitude for the support of the project to all our partners: the Ministry of Art and Cultural Policy of the Ulyanovsk region,  Foundation Ulyanovsk – capital of culture, universities, mass media, volunteers and everyone involved in the project.

See you soon at the new events and interesting projects in the coming year!
