March 21 is World Poetry Day. Ulyanovsk joined the international Granada project
21.03.2025

Ulyanovsk participated in the project at the invitation of the Spanish city of Granada and the UNESCO Creative Cities Network. World Poetry Day united UNESCO Creative Cities worldwide.

This year’s theme for World Poetry Day is Poetry as a Bridge for Peace and Inclusion. More than seventeen Cities of Literature are taking part in the celebration.

The poetry celebration in Ulyanovsk took place at the “Dar” Simbirsk Gymnasium. The event was organized by the Ulyanovsk UNESCO City of Literature office and the “Dar” Gymnasium.

Elena Cherkas, the Head of the Office, delivered a welcome speech. She spoke about UNESCO and the UNESCO Creative Cities Network, highlighting that 2025 is an anniversary year for Ulyanovsk. For a decade, our city has held the prestigious international status of a UNESCO City of Literature. During this time, the Ulyanovsk UNESCO City of Literature office has implemented and organized numerous significant international and local projects, festivals, and campaigns.

Poetry lovers gathered in a warm and inspiring atmosphere. Students recited poems by Russian poets of the 19th and 20th centuries who are celebrating anniversaries in 2025, such as Alexander Blok, Afanasy Fet, and Sergei Yesenin. The children also read an excerpt from the prose of French writer Antoine de Saint-Exupéry in French and participated in poetry quizzes. The celebration brought together poetry enthusiasts.
