"Disperse honest people, now Maslenitsa is a move." And what is Pancake Week usually associated with in Russia? With pancakes, noisy folk festivals, the beginning of spring and with traditional amulets. How to make such a doll with their own hands, the children were told and shown on March 5 in the model library No. 17 "Commonwealth".

I would like to note that it is no coincidence that the model library No. 17 became the venue for the master class. The history of the appearance and manufacture of the doll-amulet is closely connected with the traditions and customs of the Slavic peoples and, in particular, the peoples of the Volga region. Preserving the customs of the peoples of the Volga region and informing the population about them is one of the leading profiles of the Sodruzhestvo model library. The library fund contains a huge number of valuable sources of information about the life and culture of the Russian, Mordovian, Chuvash and Tatar peoples. And it is here that the program "Ulyanovsk - UNESCO City of Literature" will launch its international interdisciplinary project of the art workshop "Decoding Ornament" in April. You can find out more about the project here.

What is the significance of the Maslenitsa doll-amulet in our culture? It's no secret that in the life of our ancestors the key moments were periods associated with the length of daylight hours. The days of the solstice and equinox meant not just a change of seasons, but had both a deep sacred meaning and an important practical, everyday meaning. And always next to the person were amulets and ceremonial dolls. The summer solstice was celebrated as the time of the greatest activity of the power of the ancient light gods, the heyday of the well-being of human life and the surrounding world, rituals were performed with the participation of the Kupavka doll and the Kostroma doll. From the day of the autumn equinox, the nights became longer, the dark gods awakened and gained strength. People at that time were doing household chores, needlework, and their assistants were dolls Kuzma and Demyan, Desyatiruchka and Filippovka.

On the day of the winter solstice, when the length of the day began to increase, they made a doll of Spiridon Solstice, instructing him to change his life for the better. Well, the most joyful time is the onset of spring, the peak of which was celebrated during the spring equinox. The symbol of this period was and remains the Maslenitsa doll, which we will talk about today.

The Shrovetide doll has its own task, for which it is made. During the winter months, all sorts of troubles could happen - darkness and cold never promised anything good to a person. Any critical situation in the winter was aggravated and could significantly spoil life. In addition, at this time, evil forces and all evil spirits feel at ease and constantly try to profit from people with something. Therefore, seeing off winter has always been celebrated everywhere with cheerful multi-day holidays. The most important rite of this period was the burning of a ritual doll, which personified the final victory of the Sun over the cold. Now this doll is known as Shrovetide, in the era of the ancient Slavs it was called differently, most likely it was a name consonant with the gods Semarglu or Yarila. The modern name appeared due to the fact that during the holiday the main treat was pancakes (a symbol of the sun), which were fried in oil. The ceremonial doll Shrovetide, intended for burning in a ritual fire, was made in human height from bundles of straw or hay, which were attached to a cross of two branches. The doll was dressed in old women's clothes, decorated with colorful patches and ribbons. The Shrovetide amulet doll appeared, probably much later, in the process of trying to preserve ancient traditions during their destruction by adherents of other faiths. This is a small rag doll, which was made at the same time, but kept for a whole year, entrusting it with the role of a talisman of the home, family and general well-being.

In order to preserve traditions as a cultural heritage, children were taught to make such amulet dolls with their own hands. So we remembered the traditions, and stocked up with amulets for the year ahead!
