Ivan Goncharov accused Turgenev of stealing ideas: allegedly the characters of The Nest of Nobles were written off from the characters of The Cliff, they had similar characters and fates. Goncharov demanded that Turgenev remove some of the episodes from the novel, and he agreed. Later, when Turgenev's novel "On the Eve" was published, a dispute arose again between the writers. Turgenev proposed to arrange an arbitration court. On it, fellow writers had to decide whether he borrowed fragments of "The Cliff" in his novels. Goncharov agreed. The trial took place in March 1860. The dispute was settled by literary critics: Pavel Annenkov, Alexander Druzhinin, Stepan Dudyshkin, and censor Alexander Nikitenko. They came to the conclusion that the works of writers have little overlap "in some thoughts and expressions." However, this does not mean that Turgenev plagiarized. His novels are similar to Goncharov's because they originated "on the same Russian soil." Ivan Goncharov agreed with the decision of the arbitration court, and Turgenev decided to stop communicating with the writer and avoided meeting with him.
