Festival "Days of Germany" in Ulyanovsk: an open-air exhibition, musical experiments and German literature about Russia
11.08.2016

From August 19 to August 27, Ulyanovsk will again host the Days of Germany Festival, which has been held annually in the region for 5 years in a row.

This year, Ulyanovsk residents are waiting for more than a dozen events with the participation of guests from Germany, who have already begun working with creative residents of Ulyanovsk to create a joint cultural product that can be seen in the city next week.

Thus, the Festival will open with a concert by the German duet Liza & Kay from Hamburg, which will be held in the Peoples' Friendship Park on August 19. Together with German musicians, Ulyanovsk creative groups will perform on the same stage.

At the same time, an open-air photo exhibition will already be operating in the park, which consists of two parts: “Focus on the East”, prepared by the German partners of Ulyanovsk - the KulturAktiv association (Dresden, Germany) with the participation of a group of photographers from various countries, as well as "Focus on the West", created by Ulyanovsk photographers. The exhibition will be accompanied by its curator Matthias Schumann, who, together with his colleague photographer Jan Olker, will hold a separate meeting in the workshop format “What does the city hide from strangers?” with Ulyanovsk photographers. Registration for the workshop is available via this link.

“I am happy that relations between Russia and Germany are developing even in politically difficult times. This is very important,” says Marcus Oertel, Project Manager at KulturAktiv.

Another guest from Germany is the traveler, photographer and writer Jan Oelker, who wrote the book "Transit", consisting of stories of German residents who traveled around the USSR in the 80s of the last century. He will read some excerpts from the book and also talk about his experience of traveling in Russia. The creative meeting will take place on August 21 at 18:00 in the office of the directorate of the program "Ulyanovsk - the UNESCO City of Literature" (Plekhanov St., 10, 2nd floor). Admission to the meeting is free, you can register at the link.

From 21 to 26 August, the traditional open-air German Film Week, organized in partnership with the Goethe-Institut in Russia, awaits residents and guests of the city. Screenings for an adult audience will be held every evening at 20:30 in the courtyard of the Kvartal Creative Space, a children's program is also planned - it will be hosted by the Children's Library No. A.S. Pushkin, where screenings will begin daily at 16:00. In addition, a special screening for children over 12 years old will take place at the Khudozhestvenny cinema on August 23 at 15:00.

“I am looking forward to August, I missed Ulyanovsk and our joint international projects so much. And I’m especially glad that this year’s Days of Germany connects my hometown of Dresden with my second homeland, Ulyanovsk!”, - comments Kornelia Reichel, cultural manager from Germany, who worked in Ulyanovsk for two years on the implementation of partner projects and this year will also visit the Festival "Days of Germany".

Throughout the Festival, the Park School of Arts will be organized in the Peoples' Friendship Park, which is part of the Ulyanovsk - UNESCO City of Literature program. This project is dedicated to literature and public space, the school is supervised by artists and culturologists from Ulyanovsk, St. Petersburg and Germany. During 7 days of work with Ulyanovsk designers, actors, artists, urbanists, architects, writers and journalists, project concepts will be developed for implementation in Ulyanovsk. The main theme of the projects will be "city and literature". More information is available on the project website.

“The inclusion of the literary component in major projects taking place on the territory of Ulyanovsk is our important task in connection with the city joining the UNESCO Creative Cities Network in the Literature direction. This will allow us to develop and support the literary creative activity of the citizens, encourage them to read and instill a love for good literature,” says Elena Toporkova, Head of the Department of Culture and Leisure for the Population of the Ulyanovsk City Administration.

Closing of the Festival will be held on August 27 on the upper tier of the Peoples' Friendship Park and will be a demonstration of the German silent film "People on Sunday" (1930) directed by Robert Siodmak and Edgar Georg Ulmer, accompanied by electronic music from Dj MADMAN (Ulyanovsk). Start at 20:30.

The festival "Days of Germany" in Ulyanovsk is implemented by the directorate of the program "Ulyanovsk - UNESCO City of Literature" in partnership with the Department of Culture and Leisure for the Population of the Administration of the City of Ulyanovsk, the "Ulyanovsk - Cultural Capital" Foundation with the support of the German Embassy in Russia, the Goethe Institute in Moscow and Association Kultur Aktiv.
