Classic in modern form
19.02.2022

Ulyanovsk is the only literary city in Russia in the UNESCO network of creative cities thanks to the great cultural heritage, the famous names of Nikolai Karamzin and Ivan Goncharov, Nikolai Yazykov and Dmitry Minaev and many other names.

"The History of the Russian state", appearing in the 19th century, created a mass interest in reading in Russia, and "Frigate" "Pallada", becoming the first geographical novel, introduced the Russian reader to the world.

The program "Ulyanovsk-Unesco Literary City" will pay great attention to modern publishing projects for young people.

So, thanks to the modern edition in the format of a comic book and a travel sketchbook, "Poor Lisa" by Nikolai Karamzin and "Frigate Pallada" by Ivan Goncharov have found a new life.

Comics are one of the most popular genres of literature in the world. And the reason for such popularity is in the concise and concise form of the narrative. The replicas of the characters reflect only the very essence and key events of the work. And it was precisely such a bold experiment that N. M. Karamzin's romantic novel "Poor Lisa" was subjected to.

The illustrator of the comic was Ulyanovsk artist Pavel Klementyev. Much attention in the new edition is focused on the emotions of the characters, which are unmistakably manifested in their features, posture, and surroundings.

Also, as part of the program activities of the OOGO Russian Cultural Foundation, together with the Centralized Library System of Ulyanovsk, a book of essays by I. A. Goncharov was published in a new format, "Frigate Pallada". Travel notes that the writer made during his sea expedition in 1852-1855 formed the basis of a new modern format - a travel sketchbook.

A travel sketchbook is a way to preserve travel impressions by sketching or writing down your entire route while still on the road. This format allowed us to harmoniously depict the types of places, details of the journey, and thoughts of I. A. Goncharov.

"Carefully selected quotations of a voluminous novel fully preserve the author's idea, the composition of the work, and the writer's style. The arrangement of the quotation row gives the reader a sense of the continuity of the text, its integrity. Fragmentary parts of the novel in the new edition are perceived as a textual unity, allowing you to follow the plot in a fascinating way. A book of this format is the result of a careful attitude to the classical literary heritage," said Tatiana Alisevich, the compiler of the sketchbook.

The modern reissue of classics in such new formats as comics and sketchbooks will attract the attention of the younger generation to classical literature. In addition, these two books are bilingual - in one edition you can immediately read the English version of the work. This expands the circle of readers and gives the publication its uniqueness," said Natalia Dashuk, head of the UNESCO Ulyanovsk - Literary City program.
