The Translation Center
17.02.2022

The translation centre of the programme "Ulyanovsk-Literary City of UNESCO" has begun to work! The city administration, in organizing the activities of the programme "Ulyanovsk-Literary City of UNESCO”, has concluded an agreement on practical trainings with the region's basic universities, including the Ulyanovsk State University.

What makes our translation centre unique? It is an opportunity for students to work on translations together with professionals and native speakers, and a chance to try their hand at translation, not just business, but also fiction translation.

The first group of students (Irina Zyunova, Arina Kapishnikova, Sergey Silion and Dmitry Timohin) has already been able to appreciate the work of the centre. The students were asked to translate works by the young Ulyanovsk authors and the latest release of the anthology "The Only Question". Sergey Silion, a student participant, shared his experience with us.

We asked Sergey about his path to becoming a translator. It turned out that his curiosity and keen interest in the specifics of the content of the translation process had pushed him to make such a choice. As Sergey rightly pointed out, it is important to be attentive to the era, genre and context of the material to be translated, especially when it is a literature text, so that the result will not be out of question. It is always interesting to know how a beginner evaluates his work, as it is well known that the strictest judge of a human is the translator himself. He has a respectable and optimistic view on the matter,

"There is certainly more work for me and there will be more to do. There are many years of practice and experience to gain. Translators are always learning in the same field in which they work.”

At the end of our short interview, Sergey Silion shared his impressions of working at the translation centre "Ulyanovsk-Literary City of UNESCO",

"A lot of things were really pleasant. It's very nice to feel the positive atmosphere in the team. I would also like to point out the workstations provided for the students, everything looks modern and technologically advanced.”

"The programme "Ulyanovsk - UNESCO Literary City" is a living process, involving communication with all the social institutions of the city, the region, the country and the world. This is its unlimited resource. It is important that universities in the region have become actively involved in the work of the programme. For them, the Translation Centre will be a unique tool for organizing translation practice, and for the programme this is an opportunity for the efficient creation and expansion of the glossary", said Elena Toporkova, Head of the Department of Culture and Leisure-time Activities of the Ulyanovsk City Administration.

It's good to know that our city and our program are so actively developing, showing interest in cooperation and further joint development in different directions.  We remind you that we are open to each and every one of you, because we are bound by one common goal of cultural development.
