Applications for the International Literary Residence are accepted from writers and artists from UNESCO cities of literature who are ready to create a text or literary project related to Ulyanovsk.
Recall that the residence in Ulyanovsk, the UNESCO City of Literature, was opened in 2019. Its first guests were the poet Andrei Hocevar from Ljubljana and the poet David Howard from Dunedin, whose presentations aroused great interest and whose projects provided opportunities for collaboration with local authors.
This year, applications are accepted not only from writers, poets, translators and screenwriters, but also from artists, illustrators, visualizers. To be selected, candidates must submit an idea for a text or literary project related to Ulyanovsk by April 30th. The results of the selection will be announced in May, and in September the resident will arrive in the city to work on the project, the results of which he will present to the citizens at the end of the month at the presentation.
As explained by the directorate of the Ulyanovsk – UNESCO City of Literature program, work with literary artists will make it possible to supplement the visual space of the city with literary objects and symbols associated both with the literature of Simbirsk-Ulyanovsk, which has become a classic, and with the texts of contemporary authors.
An important part of the program will be the participation of the resident in the literary life of the city and acquaintance with local authors, which will help develop international contacts and projects. In 2019, the guests of the residence became participants in such events as the International Forum of Young Writers, the Literary Tram, the Literary Trolleybus, the Pushkin in the City of U festival, etc.
In 2019, the organization of the writer's residence in Ulyanovsk became possible thanks to sponsors and partners: the Stary Simbirsk Hotel and Sergey Kuznetsov, the Ulyanovsk branch of Rostelecom, Ulyanovskelectrotrans Municipal Unitary Enterprise, Gurman gastromarket. In 2020, the residence will also be organized through sponsorship.
Ulyanovsk authors can apply for residencies around the world
In turn, Ulyanovsk authors can become participants in similar writers' residences in other UNESCO cities of literature, which regularly announce applications. So, for example, now applications are accepted by residences in Slovenia and Iceland. Local writers receive information about new competitions and residencies from the directorate of the Ulyanovsk - UNESCO City of Literature program through a special Writer's Info Point mailing list. To subscribe to it, just send an email to infopoint.ulskcityofliterature@gmail.com. Information about opportunities for writers can also be found at http://ulyanovskcreativecity.ru/
For reference
In 2015, Ulyanovsk received the status of the Most Reading Region of Russia, and also entered the UNESCO Creative Cities Network in the Literature direction. Today, the UNESCO literary network includes 39 cities around the world.
